Perfect for smaller gardens and patios, this compact evergreen azalea will be quite happy in a larger pot filled with ericaceous compost (provided it is kept well fed and watered), but if you have acidic soil, it can also be planted straight out in the border. In larger gardens or woodland settings, Rhododendron 'Madame Albert van Hecke' will offer year-round structure as well as a profusion of late spring and early summer colour when its clusters of bright pink flowers open.
- Garden care: Avoid planting too deeply. Apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of leaf mould around the base of the plant each spring.
